In a world overflowing with generic, cliché-loaded role playing games, finding a genuinely good fantasy adventure can be a difficult quest in itself. Thankfully, however, the good people at Paradox Interactive have brought the wonderful Elven Legacy into the world. Allowing you to take control of Lord Sagittel and his elven forces in a fantastical world where the antagonistic Damned control undead forces - which oddly wield spears and tridents - Elven Legacy is a solid non-linear strategy RPG.

Elven Legacy is already very nice graphically and with a little cleaning and polishing should provide nice visual appeal. The final version is set to feature the human campaign with future planned expansions as well as Multiplayer scenarios and even tools which will give players to ability to create and distribute their own missions and campaigns. All in all it was an enjoyable experience and while nothing truly groundbreaking the branching paths upgradable units and chance to play as both elf and human should keep fantasy fans and strategy enthusiasts quite happy for a long while.

Elven Legacy site unlike many traditional RTSs is attempting to break from the pack by combining the micromanagement of an RTS with the combat and turnbased antics of a game like Fire Emblem. While Elven Legacy does certainly resemble Fire Emblem more so than a traditional RTS there is no denying that the game has drawn some inspirations from titles like Warcraft III. The lore of the story may be overused a bit in games nowadays but 1CInoCo has done a surprisingly great job of really fleshing out the story and making it into their own.
Elven Legacy seems to be shaping up to become a quality standalone title by a brand new developer. The games on pace to be surprisingly deep and could be a great way to lose
yourself for a weekend or two.

Aside from the improved AI which is the single most important thing that needed to be improved from Fantasy Wars Elven Legacy is very much the same game. The campaigns are different with new missions some new units and a different plot but with the same style graphics and turnbased mayhem. Expect many hours of turnbased strategy entertainment when Elven Legacy is released.

In practise the game reminds me greatly of another lesser known strategy game The Battle for Wesnoth a free SRPG for Windows OSX and the popular variations of Linux. I play it at work a lot not only because its easy it installs straight from default repositories in Ubuntu as well as OpenSuSE but because its a quality game. If Elven Legacy is more or less Battle for Wesnoth with better graphics and a more involved story instead of loose campaigns and multiplayer then Ill indeed be a very happy camper.

Elven Legacy reminded me a bit of Heroes of Might and Magic with its turnbased moves for movement and battles the fantasy figures the artifacts and the look of the game. While not as complex or compelling it is still a lot of fun and offers a good mental workout. Turnbased strategy games are my favorite type of strategy as I enjoy intelligent games which allow you to turtle your way through as fast or as slowly as wanted. I look forward to the final release even if the Elf chicks look like hoochymamas from American Idol tryouts.
